You just got your new puppy home and now you’re feeling overwhelmed and like you’re in over your head?
Don’t worry, everyone else with a new puppy feels that way too! In addition to my own blog posts on puppy raising, here are some additional resources that can help.
Before and After You Get Your Puppy
These two PDF ebooks are an invaluable resource for new puppy owners. Available from Dog Star Daily and written by Dr. Ian Dunbar, they’re a how-to manual on raising a well-adjusted, well-socialized, well-trained puppy. I don’t do everything as Dr. Dunbar recommends, but I did borrow a lot from him!
The Culture Clash
This book by Jean Donaldson completely transformed the way I look at dogs. Many modern clicker trainers came to the positive training revolution through Karen Pryor’s Don’t Shoot the Dog, but the book that really turned me on was The Culture Clash. I consider it required reading for all dog owners. It’s available on Amazon in both Kindle and paperback formats.
The Other End of the Leash
This amazing book by certified behaviorist Patricia McConnell is a great companion The Culture Clash. It turns the camera away from the dog and onto us, the owner, explaining why we do the crazy things that we do to dogs. It’s a deeper read than The Culture Clash, but McConnell’s writing is very accessible and the book is full of illustrative anecdotes that make her message simple to understand and remember. Again, available on Amazon in Kindle, hardback, and paperback versions.
